Shaft Straightening
Not all vibration comes from the propeller. A bent shaft — from a strike, a grounding, or a line wrapped at speed — throws the whole driveline out of true, and no amount of prop balancing will hide it.
We straighten propeller shafts and check them together with your prop, so the vibration gets fixed at its source instead of chased around the boat.
Signs your shaft may be bent
- Vibration that balancing didn’t cure
- If a freshly balanced prop still shakes the boat, the shaft or its alignment is the usual suspect.
- Vibration after an impact
- A strike hard enough to ding the prop can also flex the shaft — they should be checked together.
- Uneven wear
- Worn bearings and seals on one side are a telltale of a shaft running out of true.
Prop and shaft, checked as a system
Because we recondition the propeller and straighten the shaft under one roof, you don’t end up with a perfect prop on a bent shaft — or the reverse. It’s the same holistic approach we bring to every repair: find the root cause, fix it, and prevent the next failure.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if it’s the prop or the shaft causing vibration?
You often can’t tell from the helm — that’s why we check them together. Vibration can come from an unbalanced prop, a bent shaft, poor alignment, or old bearings; we identify which before any metal gets worked.
Can you straighten my shaft if I bring only the shaft?
Yes — though bringing the propeller too lets us verify the pair. Call or text (786) 420-4985 to talk through what you’ve got before making the trip.
Do you also handle couplings?
Yes — coupling repairs are part of our driveline work. A worn or misaligned coupling can cause the same symptoms as a bent shaft.
