Remove Prop Vibration and Improve Your Boat Ride

Balancing is an essential part of reconditioning a propeller. Vibrations caused by an unbalanced propeller make the trip uncomfortable for passengers and can damage the driveline of your boat.

Static balancing

Static balancing is done first, to make sure no blade is heavier than the others. If one of the propeller’s blades weighs more than the rest, it will drop to the bottom.

This procedure is often only used on smaller propellers; bigger propellers need a more advanced method to achieve the ideal balance.

Dynamic balancing

Two-plane dynamic balancing is the best technique to ensure your propeller is correctly weighted at both the leading and trailing edges. To avoid vibration, the propeller’s weights must be balanced with no opposing forces present.

The technician removes material from the propeller’s heavier areas as the computer indicates. When the dial’s fluctuation is at its lowest and the propeller runs smoothly, the propeller is fully balanced.

The spinning and grinding procedure is repeated until the prop is evenly balanced. A dynamically balanced propeller means your boat won’t vibrate because of the prop.

Keep in mind that other causes — a shaft that needs repair or alignment, or old bearings — can also contribute to vibration.

How do I know if my propeller is out of balance?

What’s the difference between static and dynamic balancing?

Static balancing checks that no blade is heavier than the others at rest — it’s often enough for smaller props. Two-plane dynamic balancing spins the propeller and corrects weight at both the leading and trailing edges, which is the right method for bigger propellers.

My prop is balanced but the boat still vibrates. Why?

Vibration can also come from a bent shaft, poor alignment, or worn bearings. We can straighten shafts and check couplings too — ask us about it when you bring the prop in.
